The Diagnosis That Changed Everything When Messi was 10 years old, his future as a professional footballer was thrown into doubt. He was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency—a condition that stunted his physical development and required expensive daily injections costing at least $1,000 per month . His father's health insurance covered only two years of treatment. Newell's Old Boys initially agreed to contribute but later reneged on their promise . River Plate, the Buenos Aires giant, scouted Messi and offered to pay for his medical treatment after he scored four goals at a trial. But Newell's refused to release his player card, preventing the transfer . The situation seemed hopeless. The Napkin That Made History As the Messi family had relatives in Catalonia, they sought to arrange a trial with Barcelona in September 2000, when Messi was just 13 years old . First-team director Carles Rexach was immediately captivated. But the board of directors hesit...

When the Dutchman joined us pitchside at a bitterly cold The Valley following our FA Cup victory over Charlton, we put that phrase to him and the man himself couldn’t hide his delight, with a broad smile etched across his face. Signed from Ajax in the summer, he was – you’d imagine – signed to help add to our defensive ranks. He is, after all, known as being a left-back or left-sided centre-half in his homeland. But he will go down in the record books as being the first Chelsea player to score under the tenure of Liam Rosenior, firing home our first in the 5-1 FA Cup victory. And, we should add, it was an absolute bullet of a finish that any striker would have been proud of.  ‘To be honest, I was a little bit surprised when it went in so that’s why I didn’t really celebrate too much!’ Hato explained, with a wry smile, of his first Chelsea goal when asked to talk us through it. ‘I think it was a good hit and I’m just so happy to score for this great club.    After weeks of rumours about ongoing interest and positive talks, Milan confirmed the signing of Füllkrug on an initial loan deal from West Ham United just hours after the window had officially opened on January 2. In actual fact, the striker had been training at Milanello with his new teammates since Boxing Day, thanks to the clearance granted by the London club. The aim was to have him ready for Massimiliano Allegri for the match against Cagliari, and he did indeed make the squad. Not only that, but we got a cameo from the German off the bench, and he grew into the game after a rusty start. What can fans expect from a player many West Ham fans were happy to see the back of? Back story Niclas Füllkrug was born in Hanover on 9 February 1993 in Hanover, Germany. He played for a number of different local sides including TuS Ricklingen – where he spent eight years from 1996 to 2005 – and then Sportfreunde Ricklingen for one year. It is believed that while with th...

DETROIT -- J.J. McCarthy was hailed by teammates in a jubilant locker room after leading the Minnesota Vikings to a much-needed, 27-24 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. "It was awesome," McCarthy said, choking up. "When you're hurt, being on IR last year, and being out for five weeks, it absolutely kills me not being out there with those guys because I love every single one of them. "I know they got my back -- and I've got theirs -- the rest of the way." The Vikings (4-4) suddenly have some more hope for this season after losing two straight and three of four, bouncing back behind their second-year quarterback after a high-ankle sprain that stunted his season. McCarthy didn't play as a rookie because of a knee injury. McCarthy threw two touchdown passes, ran for a score and sealed the victory by throwing a 16-yard pass to Jalen Nailor on third-and-5 from the Minnesota 28, a play that allowed the Vikings to run out the clock. "J.J. made one...

Entering Week 8 of the college football season, eight AP Top 25 teams fell this past Saturday, causing more shakeup in this week's poll. Ohio State continued to roll, unchallenged as the No. 1 team in the country, beating then-ranked No. 17 Illinois, 34-16, on the road. Miami (Fla.) stayed at No. 2 off a bye week. Yet again, a top 3 team suffered an upset when Oregon lost to Indiana in a top 10 conference matchup. After snapping the Ducks' 22-game home win streak, the Hoosiers moved into the nation's top 3. The win was just Indiana's second-ever over a top-five opponent and its first since 1967. Texas A&M moved up one spot to No. 4 after defeating Florida, 34-17. The Aggies jumped Ole Miss, which dropped to No. 5 after barely sneaking by Washington State at home by a field goal. Alabama rose past its preseason ranking to No. 6. The Crimson Tide dealt Missouri its first loss, beating the Tigers 27-24. Texas Tech remained unbeaten, dismantling Kansas by 25 points, an...
